What is Disco Dána?
The word ‘dána’ has many connotations in Irish - it can mean bold, adventurous, naughty, cheeky, impish, anarchic. It’s a word that sits well on the disco dance floor. We asked host Cian Ó Cíobháin to tell you a bit about his party..
If I was to tell you why you should come along to Disco Dána, I’d give you two reasons. The music. And the people who come along to dance to the music.
If I were a DJ with one particular sound, I’d probably find it easier to explain to you what kind of music I play. While most of what I play out could be broadly described as house music, I do also mix things up with some disco, indie, post-punk, Italo, soul and more. Some might call it eclectic, but I’ve found that description changes from person to person. Not to mention from party to party.
But not being wedded to any one sound, means that my sets are usually quite diverse and lend themselves to creating a loose, house party vibe.
Most of the Disco Dána parties I’ve hosted have happened in Hen’s Teeth and I’ve received some interesting feedback from people who’ve come along to the nights, to quote a few:
This is the only club night that I can bring my other half to where we both enjoy the music … as they know they’ll hear plenty of songs, rather than just electronic stuff all night.
I love how you give us a break every now and then instead of banging it out all night.
You took us on a voyage tonight with your music selections [on an occasion I spent most of the night sweating and pondering ‘what the hell will I play next?’]
The parties usually - though not exclusively - attract an older crowd. The early start on the dance floor suits them, instead of waiting around for a club to open at midnight.
Here are ten tunes that have featured quite a bit at Disco Dána parties:
The Bee Gees - Love You Inside Out
DAF - Mussolini (Giorgio Morder & Denis Naidanov Remix)
Dusty Springfield - In Private (12” Version)
Fun Fun - Color My Love
Glass Candy - Warm In The Winter
Joe Jackson - Steppin Out
The Kinks - Lola
Stereolab - Cybelle’s Reverie
Sugababes - Push The Button
Yeah Yeah Yeah’s - Maps
This will be my first time playing in Fidelity Studio and I am ar bís to hear what some of my favourite records sound like through the lauded house system.
